    I have has similar experiences with Japanese people refusing to speak Japanese because they want to practice English then the communication fails and it becomes incredibly awkward. Not so much anymore though because I have learned to force people to speak Japanese to me. If they try to fight me on it I just say something like 「日本だからね！」 then they usually give up.
